Assessing and estimating the efficiency of product development is difficult. PDE Pulse is an indicator that has been developed to give a broad picture of the whole product and service organization’s efficiency and productivity. The indicator consists of six important factors of success. It gives you a picture of where your organization does well and where there is still room to improve.  

PDE Pulse is an organization level indicator 

Product and service organizations are often estimated for the productivity of only a singular function. In other words more, often than not, only a singular silo is assessed and estimated. An example of this could be only estimating and assessing coding, testing or sales productivity. Product development productivity on the other hand is a sum of all the functions and knowledge in the organization. PDE Pulse estimates the entire value chain and shows the key factors for productivity and success. PDE Pulse is not dependent on operational models and it can be used in all product and service organizations, and for the most part, even in project organizations.

PDE Pulse is based on Contribyte’s winning product organization model 

Contribyte has developed a winning model for product organizations from analyzing the success and helping hundreds of different product and service organizations.  It is compiled of winning non operational model dependent product or service organization’s key elements. The model’s six main parts break off into winning product organization’s thesis, and from there into smaller pieces. All of these thesis are non dependent of the operational model, so they work with a multitude of different product or service organization’s guides.  

  

 

Winning product organization

An organization that developed its products or services requires success in many field in order to prosper. A product development organization is an ensemble that has to work together seamlessly. The Contribyte mindset of successful product or service organization consists of six fields: business and customer oriented approach, functionality and perceived quality, operative efficiency, motivated and action represented staff, value creation with co-operation and vigilant perseverance. 

Business orientation and customer orientation is one of the key elements of product development. The role of product development is to create lucrative business for the company. You have to understand markets and customers, so you must make this understanding especially clear for the people in your organization making the products. This field is related to the organization’s ability to innovate their product models, marketing models and sales models.  

Functionality and perceived quality is formed from customer experience aswell as the product’s technical quality. Quality is never built afterwards, but instead it is built with good procedures all the way from staff level and it is affected by the collaboration of different teams and people. Testing, quality ensuring and user experience optimization shoudl all be done as early as possible. Keeping track of operating models should be done for the whole duration of the production of value chain.

Guidance and operative action capability is usually made up of agile and lean methods in big organizations from organizational models. These include, as an integral part, building quality during  production, appropriately sized deliveries, continuous integration, diverse feedback cycles from different levels, and continuous learning in the form of retrospectives or Kaizen practices, for example. Also organizational guidance models affect value production speed and efficiency. Methods that are fit for organizations always depend on the organization, business model, and product or service. 

Motivated and action accountable personnel is the least highlighted key element of efficient product development. Motivated and happy people are proven to be more efficient and make better decisions. When it comes to decision making, it is important that the Organization makes decisions on levels, where people with the best view of the subject get to utilize their expertise. That is why it is detrimental to have your organization’s personnel accountable. Some examples of optimizing this field would be practical self-direction, working feature teams, motivating goal setup and bonus system, and the chance for professional development. 

Value creation with co-operation means the ability of the organization to create value with cohesion. Product and service development always requires everyone to work together. For a product to succeed it requires product management, product development, management, sales, marketing and customer service to work together. Winning organizations always create the skills to make things work as one.  

Vigilant sustainability means the organization’s ability to create long-term sustainable business models with changing markets, customer needs, technology and staff. The organization must understand trends and be able to respond to a change in the real market or customer needs without forgetting the existing client base, the existing technology, and the maintenance and development of staff skills. Perseverance and vigilance are key in all these four areas.

Organizations operate guided by culture, practices and tools. R&D organizations work most effectively when the culture, business models, and tools guide the organization towards a balanced and effective product development.

PDE Pulse indicator’s implementation in practice

PDE Pulse estimates the organization’s capability in six different fields. The estimation happens with a 60 question questionnaire. This questionnaire will be answered by the organizations that matter the most to the success of the product or service, which essentially is product development (entire R&D personnel), customer acquisition (sales and marketing), operations and management. So in other words, most of the organization answers the questionnaire that takes 10-15 minutes to answer. The questionnaire has been made with Likert’s 7-step scale. This scale and method has been used in studies often. Seven (7) value scale gives precise answer choices, but does not confuse the responder. In our trials, this scale has proved itself to be the most precise for this purpose. 

Fields and active improvement

From every winning product organization’s six fields you get an average, that can be benchmarked to other organization’s numbers and not just for general analysis. From these numbers you get a picture from which fields in your organization you could improve and where it is fruitful. You can go in depth into every single question, and understand what to improve. 

When it comes to winning organizations continuous improvement, it is one of the most important principles. For this reason PDE Pulse questionnaire is done at least twice to understand trends and development. The most common operational model is to do the questionnaire every six months in order to have time for change and improvement.  

In-depth analysis

The results are analysed, both within different fields and according to different functions. This way you can find abnormalities inside the organization in the form of questons. Through this method you find the areas where to improve.

As paid add-ons, the indicator has an area for open questions for your different fields, and possible organization-specific questions. These organization-specific questions are useful for when you have already found the areas on where to improve, and want to monitor progress.
