Kanban basics

Kanban Basics

Kanban is designed for managing of a continuous flow of work and an agile development method aimed at optimizing with its roots in the manufacturing industry. Kanban means “visual signal” or “bulletin board”, and visualizing work with Kanban Visualization plays a key role. Unlike in Scrum, Kanban does not contain clearly defined stages for iteration planning and publishing its results, but the work is done in a constant stream one part at a time until it is done.

In addition to the work of visualization, limiting the number of ongoing work has a very important role when using Kanban. Without this principle Kanban only works as a visualization technique, which in itself does not help the team optimize its work and focus on the creation of true value. As all agile methods, value creation, and this concentration is also crucial in Kanban.

Kanban does not define itself fundamental principles with the exception of any special roles or phases. During the course, participants are also presented with concrete examples of how elements from other agile methods can be used while using Kanban.

Kanban is based on the Lean philosophy, so the course also deals with the basic ideas of Lean software development in addition to basic principles of agile development. The course is interactive and participatory in nature. The issues raised are illustrated with practical examples and exercises.

The course does not require previous knowledge of the use of Kanban, but it is recommended that participants have previous understanding of agile development. Some of the subjects covered are closely related to the Scrum method.
